Although the Cattle Manager Program now automatically makes a backup of your data if you have selected this option within Tools and Options, we strongly recommend that you make a "normal" backup onto floppy/Flash Drive/Writable CD after each session of data entry. This will prevent losing your data inthe event of a lightening strike, burglery, etc.
Floppy disk backup
-
Choose the option 'Backup' from the 'File' menu.
- There are 3 tabs across the top of the screen that is displayed - Backup, Restore and Options. The 'Backup' tab will currently be selected. If you are using Windows XP, you will have to ensure that in the Options tab, the 'Format Floppy Disk' option is switched off as Windows XP has its own method of formatting floppy disks.
- Place a formatted double-sided high-density disk into the drive.
- Click on the box next to '3.5 Floppy (A:)' to highlight it
- Select the 'Backup Now' box on the left . (If this box remains grey and unresponsive check the selection under 'Backup to'.)
- If you are reusing a disk that has previously had data copied onto it, you will be given details of the dataset name, date and time of backup. Confirm 'Yes' if you wish to overwrite and, hence replace, this backup with the new one. Click on 'No' if you wish to preserve this disk and use another one.
Flash Drive (Memory Stick) backup
- First, check that you have created a folder on your flash drive to backup into:
Go into 'My Computer', double click into your flash drive (usually F://).
Go to 'File', click 'New', then 'Folder'
Over write 'New Folder' with 'Cattle Backup'
We recommend that you have at least two memory sticks to backup to alternately so that if one is lost or damaged, you always have a backup that is not too old.
If you have more than one dataset, you need to create a folder for each one, i.e. 'Jones Bros Backup' and 'Davies Ltd Backup'.
- In Cattle Manager, go into 'File', click 'Backup'
- Click on the plus sign next to the flash drive. This will expand the contents of the drive to show the folders.
- Locate the appropriate folder for the backup destination and click on the yellow folder (or existing backup name if it is to be overwritten).
- Click on 'Backup Now' on the left-hand side.
- If a backup up has been previously made to this location you will be warned when it was made and asked to confirm that you wish to overwrite it.
