Unit Types
If you want to set up a unit that is specialised to your own business, you may need to set up a new category, i.e. if you sell flowers in singles, bunches and bouquets, you may set up a category called 'Flowers'.
The categories group the units that you wish to record your products in. We have already added some categories for you (length, weight, etc.).
Within each category are the units themselves. Each category should have at least one unit with a multiplier of 1 as a standard. (i.e. the category Weight has Kilogram as a base unit with a conversion factor of 1.) All subsequent units or pack sizes will need a conversion factor. (i.e. a Tonne = 1000 Kg, therefore its conversion factor is 1000.)
We recommend that you use an existing category so that your base unit is a recognised amount (i.e. 1Kg or 1m) however, if you create a new category, you will automatically be prompted to enter a base unit. To help you determine the conversion factor click on the button called 'Unit Converter' to display a large number of length, area, volume and weight units and their conversion rates.
To set up a new unit
- Click into Setup - Unit Types.
- Choose the relevant category (i.e. weight if you are setting up a unit that measures in Kg or T) or set up a new one:
- Click the 'New Category' button.
- Enter the name of the category then the name and abbreviation of your base unit.

Once you have chosen your category (or set up a new one),
- Click 'New Unit'.
- You will be prompted to enter the name, abbreviation and conversion factor for your new unit.

If units are not relevant to your business - perhaps you provide a service, you should use the category and unit called 'unassigned'.
